What exactly is acupuncture? Plant City Natural Medicine & Pain Center explains

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the energy flow or life force that is believed to flow through pathways (called meridians) in your body. By inserting very fine needles into specific, carefully allocated points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.

In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body’s natural painkillers and increases blood flow. Acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain.

A little bit of History – from Ancient China to Plant City Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China that can be traced back at least 2,500 years, but some authorities claim that it has been practiced in China for some 4,000 years. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease and poor health. Acupuncture may, correct the imbalance of flow at identifiable points that are close to the skin. Plant City Natural Medicine & Pain Center staff believes that such balance is possible to achieve with natural methods.

The origin of Chinese medicine is a fascinating story and acupuncture represents only one facet of their medical system. The first recorded attempt at conceptualizing and treating disease dates back to about 1500 BC during the Shang dynasty. Tortoise shells with inscriptions dating from that time have been found, and it is thought that these were used for divination in the art of healing. The philosophical basis of much of the very early Chinese medicine seems to have been to seek harmony between the living and their dead ancestors, and the good and evil spirits that inhabited the earth.
